About Self Governance Programs

At the heart of Seva Mandir’s approach to development is a deep and abiding respect for the right of people to define and strive to actualize their own aspirations for a better future. In service of this ideal, Seva Mandir has helped create and works in partnership with over 530 Village Development Forums in southern Rajasthan, which administer over 600 Village Development Funds and fund more than 100 projects annually. Broadly, the self governance program aims to create an ecosystem where the positive forces of cooperation, transparency, equity, justice and responsible autonomy within the community can help lead the villages towards comprehensive development.

“Why did people steal stones out of the wall put up under the World Bank scheme, while we haven’t lost a single stone out of this wall? Because of the difference between a wall villagers had built as a community, and a wall that had been built for them.”

- Mark Tully, ‘India, The Road Ahead’, page 141
